This hides the fact that the kidneys are failing. In other words, the kidneys have a lot ‘in reserve’. The body manages for quite some time to adapt to high levels of toxins and water in the blood. It does this by making the kidneys work harder. To measure kidney function, we rely on a very important test – the level of a substance (that comes from muscles) called creatinine. It is the single most important piece of information that a kidney doctor or nurse needs to look after you. Its normal level is 70–120 micromoles (this is a very small amount of the substance) of creatinine per litre of blood.

In 1995, the UK’s performance in terms of take-on for dialysis left a lot to be desired. The UK came twelfth, with only half the dialysis take-on rate of the top country, Germany. As in football, we are way behind the Germans. Fortunately for kidney patients, however, the national take-on rate for dialysis is improving. In 1998, the UK took on 96 new dialysis patients per million population, compared to 87 in 1995. These numbers were significantly better than the take-on rate of only 61 in 1993.

Infection can be diagnosed by testing a sample of your urine. You may be given antibiotics and can take painkillers if necessary. Other complications of polycystic disease include cysts in your liver, high blood pressure and an increased chance of having a stroke.
